Kobe Bryant recalls “I remember when, as a kid, I got my first real basketball. I loved the feel of it in my hands... I loved the sound of it, too. The tap, tap, tap of when a ball bounced on the hardwood. The crispness and clarity. The predictability. The sound of life and light.… Those are some of the elements that I loved about the ball, about the game. They were the reasons I went though all that I went through, I put in all that I put in… It all came back to that special tap, tap, tap that I first became infatuated with as a boy.”
Kobe Bryant is a former American professional basketball player. Born in 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bryant spent his early years in Italy and joined the NBA right after completing high school. He spent his entire career with the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He led the NBA in scoring during two seasons and ranks third on the league's all-time regular season scoring and fourth on the all-time postseason scoring list. Although later seasons were marred by injuries, he surpassed Michael Jordan for third place on the NBA all-time scoring list in December 2014 and retired in 2016 after scoring 60 points in his final game. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Bryant’s professional accomplishments highlight the nature of his hard work and dedication. Whilst a lot of players try to pare down their lifting and training to conserve their energy during the season, Bryant trains throughout the year. Said about his routine: “My routine was grueling. It involved stretching, lifting, training, hooping, recovery, and film study… putting in a lot of work and hours. A lot of players pare down their lifting and training during the season. They try conserving their energy. Not me though. I found that yes, this work might be strenuous on the day to day, but it left me stronger and more prepared during the dog days of the season and the play offs.”“what I’m saying is that greatness isn’t easy to achieve. It requires a lot of time, a lot of sacrifices… people don’t always understand just how much effort from how many people goes into one person chasing a dream to be great.”
Bryant also made philanthropic contributions to society. Bryant has partnered with the non-profit After-School All-Stars as part of the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation. He also runs an annual summer camp called the Kobe Basketball Academy.
When asked about how he would like to be remembered, Kobe stated “Hopefully, they perceive me as person who did whatever he had to do to win above all else. Above anything. Above stats. If they say that about me I’ll be happy.”
